The Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI Interface is about the easiest way to connect your musical keyboard to your computer. If your computer has a USB jack (most computers in the last few years do), you simply connect the UX16 to your USB connector on your computer and plug the MIDI in and out cables (the actual length of the USB cable is 2 feet and the length of the MIDI cables is a little over 4 feet) into your keyboard.

You will need to install a 'driver' so that your computer knows about the UX16 and the driver is included with the interface on a CD-ROM. What are the Advantages of Connecting my keyboard to my computer? Many people that purchase keyboards would love to be able to save and edit their songs in the computer, the same way that they use Word Processors. Having a graphical display, whether you choose the Piano Roll view or Notation view, makes it very easy to fix any errors you may have made playing your song. Of course, composers like the fact that they can print their masterpieces. Once you are connected to your computer, you will need some kind of music software.

There are many kinds of software available for handling music, from very inexpensive to thousands of dollars. How many channels of MIDI does the UX16 support? The UX16 can handle 16 channels of simultaneous playback. This will support your music production system with one MIDI OUT port (16 channels) and one MIDI IN port (16 channels). This is the number of channels you need to create and playback General MIDI files.

What are the advantages of USB? With a USB connection, you can connect and disconnect the USB cable while the power to the computer is on. The UX16 operates on USB bus power and does not require a power adaptor or batteries. The indicator lights show if the UX16 is connected properly to your USB jack and there are also lights to indicate when it is receiving MIDI IN & OUT. This is very handy to verify operation.

You can easily expand the number of ports by using a USB hub to connect multiple UX16 units. A maximum of 32 units can be connected, but this would depend on your system. Will not work with Yamaha YPG225 Yamaha UX16 MIDI/USB Converter Features:. System Requirements:. OS: Windows 98/ME/2000. Hello, I am using a MacBook Pro OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and Sibelius 7.1.3. I am a newbie to the whole idea of MIDI keyboards and have been unsuccessful in causing Sibelius 7.1.3 to detect my Yamaha Motif XF8 as a MIDI keyboard. Under Sibelius Preferences Input Devices, this is shown: Device Name: YAMAHA UX16 Port1 Type: Keyboard Input Map: MIDI Keyboard However, no green light shows up in the black rectangular 'Test' box on the right side of that menu when I play some keys on the synthesiser. It may be good to note that although I have ticked the box beside 'YAMAHA UX16 Port1,' the box is greyed out and the tick is not black but kind of white. I am using a brand new Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI interface cable and have correctly pugged the MIDI IN cable to the MIDI IN port and the MIDI OUT cable to the MIDI OUT port of the synthesiser. The usb ports of my mac are also working very well. I would appreciate any help that I can get to use my Yamaha Motif XF8 as a midi keyboard for Sibelius.

Thank you. Posted by - 10 Sep 08:59AM. Finally managed to download Motif XF Editor Standalone/VST version 1.6.6.

Though kind of late, here is the solution for any one who may face the same issue: The problem was in the choice of cable. The USB TO DEVICE connector is used to connect the synthesizer to a USB storage device (hard disk drive, CD- ROM drive, flash memory, etc.) via the USB cable.

Thus a USB (male) to USB (male) cable didn't work because that is not what the USB port is meant for. What I needed instead was a USB TO HOST cable to connect the synthesizer to the computer via the USB cable and transfer MIDI data between the devices. Unlike MIDI, USB can handle multiple ports via a single cable and so a Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI interface cable is unnecessary.
